Description
GREYHOUND RESCUE JERSEY

In July 1995, Malcolm and I took on our first greyhound not knowing the full extent of the abuse and cruelty involved behind the scenes of greyhound racing. We were approached later that year to set up a branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust in Jersey and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the last 13 years we have homed 124 dogs not only in Jersey but also in Guernsey, Alderney and Sark and six years ago Alison Le Feuvre joined us after approaching us about taking on a retired racer. She was also disgusted to learn more about the racing industry and the three of us now work together not only homing dogs but raising awareness by attending school assemblies and presentations to brownies, scouts etc. We are always available to do talks, just get in touch and we will be only too pleased to come and talk about the plight of these dogs.

During the summer months we attend the country shows and indeed take our dogs along with us for the public to meet. We also have two Open Days a year when we invite those interested to come to the Sanctuary and see for themselves what lovely pets they make.

Our owners become friends and we all meet up for walks on the beach and they give us tremendous support throughout the years. For those who cannot have a dog of their own, our sponsorship scheme works really well. Folk can chose one of the Sanctuary dogs and receive a sponsor pack which gives them details of their dog, photo, certificate, badge but above all allows them to visit their dog and be hands on with it, just give us a ring in advance.

We like to think that we can give something back into the community and this is in the form of P.A.T. dogs. Malarky and Fonz are registered P.A.T. dogs (Pets as Therapy) and regularly visit Clifton Nursing Home and sometime Mon-a-L’abbe school. These two are also blood donors and are always on call to give their blood to a fellow canine who has been in an accident or indeed is very will and needs a blood transfusion. We will come out at any time to help and indeed our guys have given four times each this year alone.

Of course these are rescue dogs who have never lived in a house or probably never met any other breeds of dogs so there is a settling in period where certain precauction need to be taken but all this can be explained if anyone would like to visit us at the Sanctuary. Anyone interested in taking on a retired racer or would just like to find our more please do not hesitate to contact Gail or Malcolm or logg on our our website and see for themselves exactly what we do.
